R-1234yf is a newer refrigerant that is being used in newer model vehicles. This refrigerant began to enter the North American market in 2014 when both Fiat Chrysler and General Motors vehicles started manufacturing their air condition systems for it. Now in 2018, about 50% of new vehicles are being manufactured with air conditions systems that use the R-1234yf. This is because the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has marked R-134a as unacceptable through their 2015 rulemaking on the SNAP program. Therefore, making the use of R-134a illegal. Beginning with the model year 2021 newly manufactured vehicles must be made to use R-1234yf.
