What is a Motor Mount?
A motor mount is a component of your vehicle that is made from rubber and steel that mounts your engine in place. It is common to have multiple engine mounts on your vehicle as well as mounts for other components of your car such as the transmission. The purpose of your car’s motor mount is to absorb noise and vibrations from your engine along with securing it in place. Without your engine mounts, the engine would cause loud noises, vibrations, and even move and jerk around.
Symptoms of Bad Motor Mounts
Your motor mounts are put through constant pressure under your engine and because of this, they will not last forever. Therefore, you will want to keep an eye out for signs that it is time to replace your engine mounts. These signs include:
- If you are noticing vibrations that were not previously present this indicates that you may need to replace your car’s motor mounts. Vibration will occur because the rubber of the motor mount has worn out and no longer able to absorb the vibrations.
- Noises of heavy metal rubbing are also an indication that your motor mounts need to be replaced. If your engine mounts are collapsed the metal from your engine and the frame of your vehicle will rub together causing the noise.
- As you shift into drive if you notice a clunk or physical motion of the engine moving this is a very strong indication that the motor mounts are worn and need to be replaced.
Ignoring the signs of bad motor mounts can lead to serious damage to your vehicle. In severe cases, the exhaust manifold can be bent or even torn off. Other engine components can also be damaged and cause vehicle failure. These damages will not only hurt your vehicle but also your pocketbook.
