How do I know it’s time to buy new tires?
At Eurasian Auto Repair we complete a 48-point inspection with every visit. During this inspection, your tires are one of the many items evaluated. We check the tread wear, tire pressure, and for any abnormal wear such as curb damage, punctures, and dry rot. This process allows us to monitor the conditions of your tires and alert you when it is time for your tires to be replaced. Signs that your tires need to be replaced include but are not limited to:
- Tread Wear: Low tread can lead to dangerous driving conditions. It is important to make sure you have enough tread on your tires to drive safely. One way to check your tread is the old-fashioned penny test. Place a penny with Lincoln’s head down. If you are able to see the top of Lincoln’s head this indicates very low tread and your tires may need to be replaced.
- Tire Age: Tire manufacturers recommend that once a tire reaches the age of 10 years that it be replaced. Even if your tire appears to be in good conditions it is not recommended to drive with them. You can check you tires age by locating “DOT” on the sidewall of your tire. The last 4 numbers succeeding “DOT” will be the week and year your tires were manufactured.
Tire Maintenance Services
In order to maintain the condition and longevity of your tires, it is important to participate in regular tire maintenance services. These tire maintenance services include:
- Balance & Rotate: Your vehicle’s tire should be balanced and rotated every 10,000 miles (unless otherwise recommended by the vehicle manufacturer). Maintaining this service allows your tires to wear evenly as you drive. Without balancing and rotating your tires can acquire uneven tread wear. Wearing your tires down unevenly for too long can cut the life of your tires short.
- Tire Alignment: Driving on rough roads can knock off your vehicle’s alignment causing uneven tread wear, vehicle pulling, and steering wheel vibration. To keep your tire’s tread wear even you will want to have your alignment inspected every 10,000 miles. Common tread wear patterns a poor alignment can cause include feathering, camber wear, and heel/toe wear.
