O2 Sensor

How To Know if You Have A Faulty O2 Sensor

A common cause for your check engine light to come on is a malfunctioning O2 (Oxygen) sensor. Your vehicle’s O2 sensors perform tests on your vehicle’s exhaust to determine how much oxygen is in it. The data from these test it sends to your car’s computer which uses the data to make the perfect air to fuel mixture to ensure that your vehicle is working at optimum performance. At some point, your vehicle’s O2 sensor will need to be replaced. Here are the two most common signs that one of your O2 sensors needs to be replaced.

The first sign that your vehicle has a faulty O2 sensor is poor gas mileage. The reason poor gas mileage can be a good indicator of a faulty O2 sensor is because the sensor goes bad it can cause problems for the fuel-delivery system. When there are problems with the fuel-delivery system it could cause too much fuel to be injected into the engine's cylinders. The excess fuel being injected will in return diminish your gas mileage. If you feel like your car just doesn't make it as far as it used to on a full tank of gas bring it in and let our ASE technicians take a look at it. We can quickly diagnose the problem and make sure that it is one of your O2 sensors that is causing the problem and specifically which O2 sensor is a fault.

The second sign that your vehicle has a faulty O2 sensor is a rough engine idle. The 02 sensor plays a role in the engine's timing and the combustion intervals. Therefore, when the sensor is faulty it can provide have negative effects to the timing and combustion levels. This will result in your engine having a rough idle. If you recognize your vehicle having a rough engine idle let our ASE technicians take a look at it. We can quickly diagnose the problem for the rough engine idle and ensure that the issue is your O2 sensor and specifically which one is causing the problem.
