Different Charging Levels of EV Charging Stations
With EV charging, it's important to understand charging levels so you can choose what is right for your specific needs.
Level 1 Charging Stations
This is the first and basic level of EV charging. Level 1 chargers are typically designed for charging from standard 110V-120V household outlets and power the vehicle at a rate of about five (5) miles per hour. These charging stations are ideal for hybrid vehicles, such as the Kia Niro, Honda Insight, and Toyota Prius V. Usually, a hybrid car will run without gas when driven over short distances, making Level 1 charging ideal for people who don't drive as often.
Level 2 Charging Stations
With Level 2 EV chargers, you need a voltage supply of between 200V-240V. They have a relatively higher charging rate of about 13-25 miles per hour, depending on the maximum charge the equipment can supply and the vehicle's maximum power rating. They are the ideal charging station if you own a battery EV like the Tesla Model 3 or Audi Q2 L e-Tron. Those EVs have relatively higher power capacity and thus, require a longer charging time. Once fully charged, you can drive your car over longer distances without worrying about running out of power.
Level 3 Charging Stations
Level 3 EV chargers are also referred to as DC (direct current) chargers. Homes use AC (alternating current), making it challenging to install a DC EV charger at a residential property. You can only find Level 3 charging stations in commercial auto charging, such as Eurasian Auto Repair in San Antonio, TX. DC chargers rely on a higher power supply and can deliver rapid charging at a current of up to 800V. In about 20 minutes, you can charge an EV up to 80%.
